5 Lesser Known Features in Google Analytics that Rock

February 8, 2013 By John E Lincoln

We love Google Analytics. But one thing that we have noticed is that some of the amazing features go unnoticed. In this post we talk about 5 lesser known Google Analytics reports that you will love.

Real Time Analytics

Real Time Analytics is a feature/report in Google analytics that lets you see people who are on your website minute by minute or second by second. You can view these people by all of those great metrics that Google Analytics offers; social media traffic, referral traffic, location, top pages, etc. This report can be very useful when you are expecting a traffic spike. Furthermore, you can watch the visitors on your site to see if they navigate from page to page or bounce. There is so much you can do with this report, see an example below.

Intelligence Events

Google Analytics Intelligence Events will give insight into things that are out of the norm or simply events that have been triggered based on some way you want to evaluate data on the website. There are four reports you can run

  • Overview: Lists automatic and custom alerts for the specified date range. The alert types are listed on separate tabs.
  • Daily Events: Automatic and custom alerts per day for the specified date range.
  • Weekly Events: Automatic and custom alerts per week for the specified date range.
  • Monthly Events: Automatic and custom alerts per month for the specified date range.

The Automatic Alerts tab will let you know about abnormal changes in visitors, pageviews, average visit duration and per visit goal value.

Cost Analysis

“Use this report to see visit, cost, and revenue performance data for your paid marketing channels. The report compares the cost of each campaign with its associated revenue allowing you to quickly see how each initiative performs.” – Google.

I really like this tab because it allows you to see how much you are actually bringing in vs what you are spending. Granted, it is in beta now but it is one to watch.

Social Analytics

The introduction of the Social tab in Google Analytics may have been the best update in the last 3 years. This tab tells you the traffic from each social media site. But it goes a step further, if you have goals set up it tells you the amount of conversions social media assisted with or was directly responsible for. This has become the perfect answer to business owners everywhere who say, “How do I measure my social media ROI?”

In Page Analytics

This powerful tool for conversion rate optimization shows analysts where and how many clicks are taking place on any given section of a webpage. Based on this data, a CRO expert can determine the importance of the on-page element and make modifications. In most cases when a business owner looks at this report they are very surprised. Sometimes what you think is getting clicked on is not, and vice-versa.
