Case Study: Plex – Domain Migration

The Challenge

Plex signed on with Ignite Visibility during their migration from their old domain, plexapp.com to their new domain name, plex.tv. As many webmasters and site owners know, changing your domain name can be a potentially disastrous move for site visibility, so they wanted to make sure that everything transferred over cleanly from their old URLS to their new URLs. Additionally, they were looking to build and launch a new responsive layout that wouldn’t change very much in terms of a visual perspective for their site visitors, but that would be optimized and fully integrated with SEO for best site performance.

The Solution

Ignite Visibility worked with Plex to add optimized page titles and descriptions to the new site, restore and redirect old URLS that had been receiving traffic, and forward the traffic that had been visiting plexapp.com over to their new plex.tv domain. We used the change of address tool in the Google Webmaster Console so that the transition was attributed to the site level, rather than on a page-by-page basis.

The Result

Keyword rankings transitioned smoothly from one domain to the other.

Traffic climbed and stayed steady at normal levels.

We also went through the important (high page-rank and relevant) backlinks to the site and updated them to display the correct new URL.  Overall the transition was smooth, and reports reflect positive traffic trends and an increase in keyword rankings for the new site. Great news!
