Facebook Shared Photo Albums: How Will Internet Marketers Use Them?

August 27, 2013 By John E Lincoln

Facebook has now launched the ability to contribute to shared photo albums. How cool, right? Now you and all of your friends can upload pictures to the same place. This make a lot of sense. Personally, I just got married and I would have loved the ability to let guests upload all their photos to the same place.

Facebook Shared Albums

Facebook Shared Albums

At this point, 50 Facebook users can contribute to each shared photo album and each user can add up to 200 photos. Simple math tells us that this could mean 10,000 photos per album! This far exceeds the past limit of 1,000 photos per album.

Facebook made this recent comment on the new shared Facebook albums.

“Right now, if you were at a party and there were three different albums created, you might not be able to see all the photos [based on privacy settings], which is kind of confusing and frustrating.”

Clearly, the new Facebook shared albums feature solves this issue. However, when I consider how marketers would use this I see limitations.

Imagine that you want to use a shared album for an event. You would hope that far more than 50 people would contribute to the album. For this reason, it still might make sense to utilize Facebook hashtags for now.

According to Search Engine Journal, there are some privacy settings for Facebook shared albums.

“As far as privacy settings are concerned, Facebook users can choose to make these shared albums visible to the public, friends of contributors, or just the contributors themselves. The idea of shared photo albums reportedly came about as a result of one of Facebook’s company-wide hackathons.”

Shared albums are coming out to some users already. This will be a fun new feature to watch, however, if you are looking to use this functionally for Internet marketing you will need to make sure only 50 people or less want to contribute to an album. Also, make sure you discuss how you want to handle privacy settings with your event group.
